One main reason the Kinetics has been when it is/was, is to avoid other city events that conflict or would get in the way. I'm not even ssure that the Rez is actually open before Race Day! But these concerns may not apply of the City isn't so involved any more. Moving the event a little later is a GREAT idea, for weather reasons if nothing else. I love the idea.

First weekend in May is also the date of the Baltimore, MD, race.
It's a long shot, but somebody might be silly enough to go to Baltimore, and then Boulder on the way back a week or two later. But if they are on the same day....
And two weeks later might improve the weather odds a little?

Attendance for Kinetics has largely been a function of weather. Sunny and 80? People come by the thousands or tens of thousands. Cloudy and 50 something? A ton of people stay home. This is a significant part of the reason why KBCO hasn't made enough $$$ to keep doing Kinetics. The first Saturday in May is a crap shoot and the last several years have demonstrated that powerfully. (Coldest Highs since '00 - May 1st - 39ºF, May 2nd - 48, May 3rd - 37, May 4th - 39, May 5th - 45)
KBCO prepares for tens of thousands of people to show (and spends a lot of money for security, porta-poties, etc.), but if the weather is poor, only a few thousand show up at best, and money is lost.
In the first year of a new Kinetics having bad weather could be a potential killer as attendance will suffer. Sponsors want exposure and that means lots of people being exposed to and attending the event.
May 17th is better than the first Saturday in May, but later in the month is more of a sure thing. The first weekend in May is a very bad idea due to weather variability.
Memorial Day Saturday or Sunday could be a good choice for several reasons:
1. People are primed to go out and do something to kick off summer - and many people travel - this of course is a mixed bag, easier for people to come to a Sunday event if they are traveling with Monday off, but more events going on in competition. 2. Media coverage - Newspapers and TV Stations are primed to do soft stories on Memorial day events - so it may be easier to get media attention.
This year May 31st is the last Saturday in May - that date has a higher chance of good weather and good attendance. (lowest high temp since 2000 for the 31st is 69º, for the 17th it is 59º [Source NOAA for all the weather data]).
5-Day Average Highs (00-07) May Avg Max High (Avg) Min high (Avg) 1 to 5 67 84 42 6 to 10 70 84 56 11 to 15 71 83 57 16 to 20 75 86 60 21 to 25 76 88 58 26 to 31 78 91 67
